"W" Making Machine
The W machine started out as a kind of fun idea that was more aesthetically pleasing than anything else. I had always wanted to make a gadget that had very little function and a high aesthetic. I often feel that when I go to a museum or to an antique store, I see all sorts of beautiful objects, but I am unsure of their purpose. I knew that I wanted to make a political piece, and it didn’t take very long for me to close the gap between both ideas. I wanted to make a machine that would have the appearance of a fully functional “factory” that worked no matter how old and dilapidated it might be. The appearance of functionality is very important to me in this piece. Although it appears to work, there is no real “job”. This is how I feel about our government, especially since president Bush took office. It is not to say that I feel the government worked properly before this administration, but this group of “leaders” have made it apparent that they care very little about functionality and more about appearances. No where is this more obvious than during Hurricane Katrina.
I owe the heart and soul of this machine to the city of New Orleans.
